Dance/ Contact Improvisation 

Course description

Contact Improvisation is a Dance form, originated by American choreographer Steve Paxton in 1972.

Contact improvisations are basically spontaneous physical dialogues between two or more people in one shared space, they could be described as Physical Improvisational Jams that range from stillness to highly energetic exchanges.

In-the-moment awareness  and full body presence is developed through the engagement of multifaceted interactions on all levels (social, physical, Emotional etc).

 

Practice may include

  • Physically rolling, falling, being upside down, following a physical point of contact, supporting and giving weight to a partner.

  • Spontaneous Sound Release and Theatrical Expression.

  • Probs specifically designed to explore various themes (such as using robes to experiment with the theme of Connection)

  • MUSIC ….We will be using both live musicians as well as recorded music played from a stereo

  • Choreographed exercises in order to engage “Presence” and “Mindfulness” as well as instructions to playfully allow participants to break through barriers of Social anxieties.

 

Requirements of participants:

Loose clothing and the willingness to creatively express oneself through improvisational free flow of movement (and Sound release)

Spatial Requirements    

Fairly sized room to work with concepts of physical distance and proximity and allow spontaneous movements to develop

Duration:

1.5 hours (including warm up, instructions and warm down) over 12 weeks
